GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Director of System Data and Reporting is responsible for overseeing the management and maintenance of the Student Information System (SIS) for Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS). This role ensures the availability, accuracy, and security of student data to support decision-making and compliance with state and federal reporting requirements. The Director will collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to ensure the integrity of data systems, streamline data processes, and facilitate efficient reporting. The position plays a critical role in the district’s continuous improvement efforts by providing key data insights. The Director reports to the Executive Director of Accountability and Strategic Initiatives.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Lead the management and oversight of the Student Information System (SIS) to ensure accurate, secure, and efficient data collection and reporting.
- Serve as the primary liaison for state and federal reporting, ensuring compliance with state mandates, including data submissions and adherence to reporting deadlines.
- Collaborate with the Director of System Data and Project Management and the RCPS Technology Department to maintain and enhance data systems, ensuring integration and data interoperability across various platforms.
- Ensure procedures relating to SIS data flows are thoroughly documented
- Ensure that data-flow documentation is organized and stored accessibly in a central knowledge base shared between the Office of Accountability and Strategic Initiatives and the Technology Department
- Manage the collection, analysis, and reporting of student data to support instructional programs, school improvement efforts, and compliance with state and federal requirements.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of data processes to streamline the input, validation, and reporting of student information across the district.
- Support the administration of Virginia Standards of Learning and other online assessments by ensuring efficient integration of the SIS with testing platforms, including Pearson Access and NWEA MAP.
- Ensure that data security protocols are in place to protect sensitive student information, working closely with the technology department to implement best practices.
- Direct the training of school administrators and staff on SIS usage, state reporting procedures, and data interpretation.
- Develop and deliver reports and data insights for use by district leadership, school administrators, and other stakeholders to guide decision-making and improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with other departments to support the integration of SIS data with other district-wide applications, ensuring seamless data flow and consistent reporting.
- Monitor changes in state and federal reporting requirements, ensuring that SIS and reporting processes are updated accordingly to maintain compliance.
- Support the management of SIS staff, including training, supervising, and evaluating employees to ensure high-quality data management and reporting functions.
- Provide technical assistance to schools and departments on issues related to the SIS and state reporting requirements.
- Respond to inquiries regarding student data, reporting processes, and system functionality, ensuring prompt and accurate resolutions to any issues.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, computer information systems, data analysis, mathematics, or at least five years of comparable work experience is required. Master’s degree in data management, information systems, or a related field is preferred. Experience with large-scale data systems, educational reporting, and data visualization is highly desirable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Communication: Ability to effectively communicate complex data processes and reporting requirements to staff at all levels, including technical and non-technical personnel.
- Data Management Expertise: Extensive knowledge of student information systems, data security protocols, and state reporting requirements.
- Technology Proficiency: Strong skills in the use of SIS software, spreadsheets, databases, and reporting tools to manage and analyze data.
- Project Management: Ability to manage the implementation and maintenance of large-scale data systems and lead cross-functional teams to meet reporting deadlines and improve data processes.
- Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to work across departments and with external entities, ensuring accurate and timely data reporting.
- Leadership: Ability to manage a team, provide guidance, and support staff in achieving departmental goals related to data management and reporting.
