General Responsibilities

Performs responsible protective service work maintaining security and safe environment at a school; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. School security personnel are often "First Responders" and are often the first to arrive at disruptive and combative situations involving students with injuries or needing medical care. 
 
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Work requires standing, walking, and grasping.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, and observing general surroundings and activities.  The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
 
Essential Functions

Conducts surveillance of school buildings, grounds and activities; ensuring the security of the school; enforcing established rules and regulations.

  • Opens and closes gates to campus and parking area;
  • Monitors students, visitors and traffic entering and leaving school grounds; maintains accurate visitors' log on arrival and departure times, provides information, checks identification and parking decals;
  • Patrols hallways, stairwells, restrooms and parking area throughout the school day;
  • Monitors the loading and unloading of buses;
  • Provides security during sports events and other activities;
  • Checks all windows, doors and entrances of buildings to make certain they are secure;
  • Investigates unusual conditions or disturbances;
  • Assists with fire drills and emergency evacuations;
  • Escorts disruptive students to locations specified by school administration; helps control physical confrontations;
  • Conducts building safety inspections;
  • Assists in directing and placing of emergency vehicles during medical emergency situations;
  • Secures the school grounds and perimeter during emergency lock-down situations and drills;
  • Issues check-in passes to students who arrive on campus after the school day has begun;
  • Assists in the investigation of bomb threats and other potentially dangerous situations;
  • Assists in monitoring the cafeteria during lunch periods;
  • Monitors the movement of students on campus during the school day to maintain and prevent disruptive situations;
  • Completes Disciplinary Referral forms involving situations which require intervention by administrative staff;
  • Assists in counseling or advising students concerning healthy behavior and positive choices, as appropriate;
  • Performs related tasks as required. 

 

Education and Experience 
Current certification as a law enforcement officer is preferred.  Graduation from a community college in social or police science is desirable.  DCJS certification as an SSO required at the time of hire or ability to acquire within 3 months of start date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of practices concerning the protection of school buildings and grounds; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention; ability to think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under emergency situations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, teachers and parents.

 
Most of the on-site school security personnel come from backgrounds in law enforcement, school resource officer programs, or the D.A.R.E. Officers and School Resource Officers with the annual D.A.R.E. Camp that is sponsored by the Roanoke City Police Department and Roanoke City Public Schools.
 
Ongoing Training 
The school division personnel believe it is very beneficial for the Roanoke City Public Schools Security staff to participate in training along with members of the School Resource Officers, D.A.R.E. Officers and the administrative team.  This could include, but not be limited to, training involving first responder, bullying prevention and school violence prevention.
